Darcy & Sherry Grykuliak Bursary
Darcy was born in Leduc, Alberta and spent most of his early life there. As a teenager he was raised with his sister by a single mother who worked as a bank teller with limited means. Darcy started working summers and after school part time in order to help his mother and save up money for his post secondary education. He subsequently attended and graduated from NAIT with a Civil Engineering Technology diploma, worked for five years as a technologist to pay off student loans and then returned to Lakehead University to obtain his degree in Civil Engineering.
Sherry was born in Humbolt Saskatchewan and lived as a child on a farm near the tiny village of Pilger. As a girl Sherry helped out on the farm with numerous chores as well as attending school. At the age of 17 Sherry came to Sparwood, BC and fell in love with the rivers and mountains. She left home and struck out on her own working various jobs. Sherry raised two boys on her own as a single mother making ends meet while providing her sons with a good life and lots of love.
In 2003 Darcy met Sherry in Cranbrook, BC. In 2004 they moved to Golden for Darcy to take on the Lead Engineer role on the Kicking Horse Canyon Highway Project where they spent 16 years when they moved back to Cranbrook. The Kicking Horse Canyon Highway Project was a big career opportunity for Darcy and Sherry supported Darcy in this move.
Darcy and Sherry know what it is like to live on limited means and are providing this bursary to provide students who are in similar circumstances an opportunity to further their education and have better futures. They have established funds to support their five grandchildren’s educational opportunities. They hope that recipients of this bursary will pass this kindness on to future generations when they have the means to do so.
Available to second year students in the Civil Engineering Technology program. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic standing. Selected recipients will be asked to submit a short description on what receiving the funds would mean to them, and how they might pay-it-forward later in their lives.
