Metis Scholar Award
A student must be entering or continuing into a full-time certificate, diploma, applied undergraduate degree or undergraduate degree program in any school and must demonstrate a connection to the Metis Nation of Alberta.
Applications will be based upon the following criteria:
1. An applicant cannot be a current client of, or receiving funding from, any program at the Rupertsland Institute.
2. An applicant must show proof of Metis ancestry by submitting a copy of one of the following:
a.) A current citizenship card from the Metis Nation of Alberta; or,
b.) A current citizenship card from the Metis Nation of Alberta from a parent (along with the applicant’s long form birth
certificate) or from a grandparent (along with the applicant’s and the applicant’s parent’s long form birth certificate(s));
c.) A verifiable Metis citizenship application that is in progress with Metis Nation of Alberta Registry;
d.) A current citizenship card from one of the Metis National Council Governing members (Metis Nation British Columbia, Metis Nation-Saskatchewan, or Metis Nation of Ontario) or, the Manitoba Metis Federation.
3. The applicant must declare that his/her name will not appear on the Government of Canada’s Indian Registry, nor a Band list pursuant to the Indian Act, and is neither Inuk, nor non-Status Indian.
4. The applicant must declare that he/she is residing in the province of Alberta during their study period.
5. The applicant must declare all sources of student funding that that applicant is receiving including any financial support from a governing member of the Metis National Council, or Manitoba Metis Federation, or Alberta Metis Settlements.
6. An applicant must demonstrate current or recent involvement in the Metis community.
7. An applicant may supplement an application with information outlining the reasons for the chosen field of study, and how a Metis Scholar Award will impact the journey towards the completion of studies and career objectives.
8. An applicant who receives a Metis Scholar Award in one academic year may continue to apply for Metis Scholar Awards while continuing studies until graduation.
9. An applicant needs to know that priority will be given to Metis Nation of Alberta Citizens and those who have never received funding from Rupertsland Institute.
Students must also submit a letter outlining reasons for their chosen field of study, how a Metis Scholar Award will impact his/her journey towards education and career objectives. In addition, the letter should explain how they are involved in the Metis Community.
